Association for Family and Systemic Psychotherapy

About the AFSP

The Association for Family and Systemic Psychotherapy is a registered charity working to benefit the public through advocating for family therapy and systemic practice.

Its aim is to promote professional excellence and raise awareness of family therapy and systemic practice, both nationally and internationally.

Promoting excellence in family therapy and systemic practice

AFSP is the UK’s leading professional body for systemic psychotherapists and family therapy practitioners. It plays a central role in developing, supporting and advocating for family therapy and systemic practice across health, social care, education and voluntary sectors.

Family and systemic psychotherapy helps clients in close relationships to better understand and support each other. It enables family members to express and explore difficult thoughts and emotions safely, share experiences and views, and work together to make useful changes in their relationships and their lives.

The AFSP represents practitioners at all stages – from students and trainees to senior clinicians and supervisors – and supports them through training, resources, publications, regional networks and national conferences. It provides professional registration, CPD opportunities, accreditation pathways, ethical guidance and a platform for connection and collaboration.

Committed to promoting understanding of family therapy and systemic practice, the AFSP works with the media, policymakers, organisations and training institutions throughout the UK and Europe.

At its core, the AFSP believes in family therapy and systemic practice that is inclusive and socially responsible. It supports practitioners to help all clients make sense of their experiences and build on the strengths in their relationships.

My role at the AFSP

I was proud to be the Chief Executive Officer for AFSP and professional lead for the Association from 2022 to 2025.

During my tenure I led the organisation’s operational tasks, supporting strategic direction and representing it both nationally and internationally.

I was responsible for the operational aspects of the AFSP, working closely with the Board, members and stakeholders to promote the value of family therapy and systemic thinking in mental health services, education and social care.
